What is the cause of nonmetallic character of elements?

ANS.(i) some elements have atendency to accept electrons in the outermost orbit of their atom there by achieving stable electronic configuration and gaining negative charge.(ii) that is they have a tendency to from anion (-ve ion).(iii) Elements which have this tendency are known as non-metals. They are eletronegative in nature. the cause of non-metallic character lies in this tendency.(iv)Eg. oxygen is non-metal as it can accept two electrons in its outermost orbit(v) On moving from left to right in a period non- metallic character increases because we move from left to right in aperiod the nucleus charge increases. (vi) Due to increase in nuclear charge, the valence electrons are pulled more strongly by the nucleus and it becomes. more difficult for atoms to lose electrons. Hence, non-metallic character increases.
